Gold futures reach new record high in electronic action

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures reached a record high on Tuesday, climbing as high as $878.80 an ounce to surpass a 1980 top. Spot gold also reached a record. The gains for gold come as the dollar has dropped in response to economic data suggesting the U.S. is heading toward, or in, a recession. Gold futures recently were up $13.40 to $875.40 an ounce
